What We Do

Zwischen- raum

The ZWISCHENRAUM is a joint project of the Toepfer Foundation and the Hamburg bar HADLEY's (Beim Schlump 84a). Every Monday at 7:30 p.m. we invite you to the bar for conversation and exchange over bread and wine. Each week, a different guest is invited to present a different perspective on an overarching theme. We focus on current discourses in science and society.

Alfred Toepfer Stiftung F.V.S. - Zwischenraum

Solidarity and division, euphoria and despair, change and preservation - there's a lot we need to talk about and want to talk about. Every Monday evening, Hadley's opens its doors to get to know different perspectives and positions, to link them and to make joint plans. In particular, the focus is on exchange. After a moderated discussion with the respective guest in a cozy atmosphere, all ZWISCHENRAUM participants are invited to join in the conversation, ask questions, report on their own experiences or initiate new ones. If you just want to listen quietly for a while, you are also welcome!

Admission is free and registration is not required - but you are welcome to secure your place at reservierungen@hadleys.de. The bar will provide you with drinks and if you are hungry there is the Salon evening buffet. Drinks and food (if desired) should be paid for directly at Hadley's. There is no no minimum consumption. So if you would like to fortify yourself beforehand, you can come as early as 18:30. The talk starts at 19:30 and is normally held in German.

We are always happy to receive new ideas, topics and impulses and would like to make the ZWISCHENRAUM as open as possible. So please feel free to contact us if you would like to contribute your thoughts and ideas.

5. Leading theme: SOCIAL ENERGY

It's nice to do things together. We recharge our social batteries when we meet other people, talk to them, cook, drink wine or listen to music (e.g. at Hadley's). Working on something together, tackling a problem, protesting or picking blackcurrants are also experiences that energise us. Sometimes, however, we also lose energy during something like this. Since the pandemic, these experiences perhaps became more varied or we became more aware of them. We appreciate hugs and physical togetherness much more. But we also like to and can stay at home and come together virtually.

There are many tasks and problems that we can't tackle if we don't do it together with others. Other things that many people strive for together can be problematic and scary. Following Hartmut Rosa, what is social energy all about? How can this energy be grasped and understood, beyond physics and esotericism?

We want to approach our half-yearly theme of ‘social energy’ in our usual diverse manner: What constitutes the spaces that can release social energy, such as football stadiums or music festivals? How is social energy generated in order to bring about positive change and overcome resistance, for example through social movements? What role does investigative journalism play in mobilising democratic communities and how can we counteract the brutalisation of the social climate? We want to address these and other questions in the next edition of Zwischenraum and shed light on what arises between us and what it takes to do so. We are already looking forward to all the guests and topics.
